Quick Answer: There are two Dynamics 365 Finance certifications that matter. MB-300 (Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate) is the entry credential most Indian employers screen for — roughly three hours, about 50 questions, passing score 700 out of 1000. PL-600 is the expert-level credential, and you can sit it with a Finance focus. If you are under five years into your career, MB-300 is worth taking. If you already own go-lives, it is close to worthless on its own.
Dynamics 365 Finance Certification: The Two Credentials That Matter
Microsoft’s certification catalogue is large and confusing, and most search results about “Dynamics finance certification” are actually about other products. For finance functional work in India, only two credentials come up in interviews, and here is how they differ.
| Credential | Exam | Format | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate | MB-300 | About 3 hours, around 50 questions, pass mark 700/1000, scenario-based, proctored online | Freshers, career switchers from other ERP or finance domains, and anyone who needs a filter-clearing badge |
| Finance and Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Associate (expert) | PL-600 | Longer, harder, scenario-heavy exam with a 700/1000 pass mark; you can sit it with a Finance focus or a Supply Chain Management focus | Consultants with real implementation and design authority who are aiming for architect or lead roles |
Two housekeeping facts that save confusion. The older expert code MB-600 has been superseded by PL-600, so if a training provider is still selling an “MB-600” package in 2026, check which exam it actually books you for. And the PL-600 credential is a single exam covering both Finance and SCM with a chosen focus — it is not a finance-only exam, which is why we treat it separately in the Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management certification path article. If you want to see how these two sit inside the wider Microsoft certification landscape, that is covered in our Dynamics 365 certifications roadmap — read that rather than a restated catalogue here.
What MB-300 Actually Tests
The MB-300 blueprint is weighted toward financial management implementation, with meaningful coverage of the project accounting and procurement areas that now ship in the Finance family, plus customer and vendor master data. The questions are scenario-based rather than recall-based: you get a business situation, a set of facts and a set of proposed actions, and you pick the one a competent consultant would actually take.
| Blueprint area | What you need to be able to do | Typical trap |
|---|---|---|
| General ledger and financial management setup | Design account structures, main accounts, journals and voucher templates, posting profiles, financial dimensions, fiscal periods | Confusing a posting profile with a voucher template, or a dimension with a dimension category |
| Accounts receivable and accounts payable | Set up customer and vendor groups, payment terms, settlement, invoice and payment posting, credit management, three-way matching | Choosing the wrong posting profile for a settlement or a credit note |
| Cash, bank and asset management | Configure cash accounts and payment methods, bank reconciliation groups and matching, asset groups and depreciation profiles | Confusing the reconciliation journal with a general journal entry |
| Cost accounting and budgeting | Cost categories and costing versions, cost accounting ledger and settlement, budget models, scenarios, budget overrides | Forgetting that cost accounting data only appears after a settlement |
| Project accounting and procurement | Set up projects, cost and revenue types, time and expense handling, purchase requisitions, purchase agreements, vendors | Underestimating that these are separate apps with their own configuration |
| Data migration, testing and reporting | Plan opening balances, write positive and negative test cases, use financial and electronic reporting for a management pack | Assuming a reporting defect is a configuration defect |
The pattern that catches people: MB-300 tests judgement about which mechanism fits a business requirement. It is very hard to pass by memorising screen paths, because the options are deliberately plausible. People who pass usually did the configuration work first and then studied the blueprint to see what they did not know.
A Realistic Four-Week MB-300 Study Plan
- Week 1 — build the mental model. Learn the general ledger properly: account structures, journals, vouchers, posting profiles, dimensions and dimension categories, fiscal periods. Get a real tenant if you can — a Dynamics 365 Finance trial or a partner sandbox — and post a few transactions by hand, deliberately, including one that should fail. The product module map to learn against is in our Dynamics 365 Finance guide.
- Week 2 — cover the modules you have never touched. Cost accounting and budgeting are where most candidates lose marks, because they are the areas where “install and use” intuition does not transfer. Work through cost categories, costing versions, a settlement, budget models and scenarios. Then do AR, AP, bank reconciliation and assets.
- Week 3 — project accounting, procurement and reporting. Read the MB-300 objectives line by line and map each to something you have configured. Practise writing test cases, including the negative ones, because the exam rewards understanding of validation and posting behaviour rather than feature recall.
- Week 4 — sit practice assessments under time pressure, then book the exam. The exam is long and scenario-heavy; running out of time is the most common avoidable failure. Book the slot early, because proctored exam slots in peak hiring season fill up.
If you already know the product — you have configured or supported a live Finance instance for a year — the same material compresses into one to two weeks, which matches the roughly one-to-two-week estimate most candidates give when they are honest about it.
Is the Dynamics 365 Finance Certification Worth It in 2026?
Straight answer: it depends entirely on which side of the experience line you are on.
Under five years, it is worth taking. MB-300 is the filter Indian recruiters apply by default, because it is a fast proxy for “has touched this product”. In a market where two hundred applicants pile up for a junior role, a passed associate exam is often the only thing that gets your CV read. Our pay bands show the fresher range as ₹4–8 LPA, and the difference between ₹4.5 LPA and ₹7.5 LPA at that level frequently comes down to whether the CV had a credible signal — see the Dynamics 365 Finance salary India 2026 guide for the full band picture.
Over eight years with real ownership, it is close to worthless on its own. At senior level the interview is a design conversation about consolidation, currency translation, dimensional strategy and migration risk. Nobody is impressed by a badge there, and hiring managers have seen enough certified candidates to ask sharper questions than the exam asks. The credential also expires — Microsoft’s associate certifications require renewal, usually by re-sitting — so holding one you never use is a recurring cost for a credential nobody checks.
And there is a middle case worth naming. If you are switching from another ERP — Oracle, Sage, Tally, even SAP — a Dynamics-specific certification can accelerate the switch by making you credible in interviews within a few months. The exam will not teach you the product, but it forces a systematic pass over the functional surface, which is exactly the gap an employer is worried about when they read “8 years in Oracle financials”.
War Story: The Certified Hire Who Could Not Fix a Trial Balance
A candidate we interviewed in 2025 had passed MB-300 with a score in the high 700s and had two years of “support” on an estate. The first technical round asked a simple question: a customer says the trial balance does not balance by a round number. Where do you look first? He answered “check the journal batch”. It was the wrong first answer, and the interview went downhill from there.
The better answer — which he clearly did not have — is to check the posting profile and the dimensions on the postings, then the fiscal period and the batch status, then the currency. A round-number discrepancy almost always means a posting profile defaulted a dimension on some transactions and not others, or that a transaction was posted into a closed or mismatched period, or that an amount went to the wrong currency account structure. Those three causes cover most cases, and each has a diagnostic path.
His second problem was that he had never run a parallel close. The certification covers configuration; it does not cover the month-end rhythm, and no amount of exam preparation substitutes for closing a real period against a real bank statement. He was hired, but on a support contract with a lower band, and he told me afterwards that the exam had given him false confidence that he was further along than he was. That is the honest cost of certifying without product time: the badge moves you through the door, and the door is where the actual work starts.
How MB-300 and PL-600 Map to Pay
At fresher and junior level, MB-300 is a screening tool rather than a pay lever — it changes whether you are considered, not what you are offered. At mid level it is worth roughly 5–12% when it is the credential that distinguishes you from an identical candidate. At senior level the honest answer is that it adds nothing on its own; what adds value is the PL-600 level of design authority, demonstrated through a real consolidation, tax or project accounting design decision you owned.
The realistic ladder looks like this: MB-300 to get into the market, one full implementation to have something to talk about, then PL-600 only if you are already designing and need a credential that says so. Taking PL-600 on the strength of study material alone is a common and expensive mistake — it is a long exam with a high bar, and the pass rate does not flatter.

FAQ
What is the Dynamics 365 Finance certification for functional consultants?
MB-300 — Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate — is the associate-level credential, roughly three hours, about 50 questions, passing score 700/1000. PL-600 is the expert-level credential, with a Finance or Supply Chain Management focus.
How long does the MB-300 exam take and how many questions are there?
Around three hours with approximately 50 scenario-based questions and a passing score of 700 out of 1000. It is proctored online, so practise reading long scenarios quickly before you book.
How long does it take to prepare for MB-300?
If you know the product, one to two weeks of focused revision is realistic. If you have never configured Dynamics 365 Finance, budget four to eight weeks and get hands-on tenant time — the exam tests design judgement, and it is very hard to pass on theory alone.
Is Dynamics 365 Finance certification worth it for experienced consultants?
Rarely on its own. At senior level interviews test design judgement, migration risk and consolidation decisions, not badges. It is worth taking if you are switching ERP, if you need to clear an automated screening filter, or if you are moving towards architect roles where PL-600 carries weight.
What is the difference between MB-300, MB-600 and PL-600?
MB-300 is the current associate-level finance exam. MB-600 was the older expert code and has been superseded by PL-600, which lets you choose a Finance or a Supply Chain Management focus. If a provider still sells an MB-600 package, verify which exam is actually being booked.
