Quick Answer: The dynamics 365 customer insights journeys certification is MB-260 — Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Journeys) Functional Consultant Associate. It is a functional credential covering triggers, segments, journeys, consent and frequency management, channels and journey analytics. It is worth taking if you are moving into marketing automation or CRM operations from a marketing or analytics background, because it clears the automated screen in a thin market. On its own it changes very little about your pay, and it is a poor substitute for hands-on campaign work.

This post covers only the Journeys exam. The full ladder across all Dynamics 365 functional certifications, and how they are being consolidated, is in our Dynamics 365 certifications roadmap for 2026.

The Exam at a Glance

Item Detail Practical note
Exam code MB-260 Confirm the current code and title at booking — Microsoft’s functional exams are being consolidated over time
Official title Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Journeys) Functional Consultant Associate Easy to confuse with the Data exam (MB-220). They are different exams for different roles
Level Associate Functional. You are not asked to write code or SQL
Format Proctored multiple-choice and scenario items via Pearson VUE Scenario-heavy: “the campaign under-delivered, what do you check first” style
Pass mark Published as a scaled score; plan for 700 out of 1000 It is not a percentage — do not revise against a 70% target
Prerequisites None formally required The free Microsoft Learn path plus real configuration time is the sensible preparation
Cost Paid exam, priced per country at booking Check the live price on the Microsoft exam page before budgeting
Validity Renew annually to keep the badge active Cheap and quick once you already hold it

Verify the code, the title and the price yourself at booking. Those three are the parts of any Microsoft certification post that go stale; the skills and the study order below do not.

Which Skills the Exam Actually Measures

Skill area What you are expected to know Weight
Segments and audiences Building and reusing segments, refresh behaviour, segment-based triggers, and how a segment entry fires a journey High
Journey configuration Triggers, conditions, waits, actions, branching, exits, and multi-step journeys High
Consent and frequency management Channel consent, suppression, frequency caps, quiet hours, and what a compliant journey looks like High
Channels and message design Email, SMS, push and advertising audiences; content variants; A/B testing setup Moderate
Journey analytics Engagement metrics, exit and drop-off analysis, A/B test interpretation Moderate
Manage and troubleshoot Environment configuration, permissions, journey status, and troubleshooting a journey that did not fire Moderate

The weighting tells you where to spend study time. Trigger and segment behaviour plus consent and frequency management carry the most marks, and both are exactly the areas where real implementations fail. That is not a coincidence: the exam is aligned with the product’s sharpest edges.

What the Exam Does Not Cover (and Where People Get Burned)

  • Data modelling and identity resolution. That is the Data exam (MB-220) territory. Journeys consumes segments; it does not build them. If you cannot explain why a segment is empty, you are in the wrong exam for that gap.
  • Real audience sizing. The exam does not care that a journey reached 40% of a 200,000-person segment because of a consent model mismatch. It will not, however, let you fix a segment in a lab either — you need a real estate.
  • Channel-specific deliverability. SPF, DKIM, DMARC, sender reputation, SMS sender registration, and app-store push rules are all real costs of a live campaign and none of them are in scope.
  • Commercial judgement. Which offer, which channel mix, how to split budget. That is what your job description in an interview will actually ask about.

Read this list as a to-do for the weeks after you pass, not a complaint about the exam.

A Six-Week Study Plan That Does Not Waste Money

  1. Week 1: the boundary. Work through the free Microsoft Learn path for Customer Insights (Journeys) and write down, in one page, the difference between a segment, a trigger, a journey and a message. Most failures are conceptual, not technical — people confuse a segment membership with a trigger.
  2. Week 2: build one real journey. In a trial environment, configure an onboarding journey with a real-time trigger, a wait, a condition and two channel actions. Then break it deliberately: remove the consent check and watch what happens to the audience size. Learn the app by breaking it.
  3. Week 3: consent, frequency and suppression. This is the highest-yield week and the one people skip. Map every channel to the consent it requires, set a frequency cap, configure quiet hours, then answer: for each suppression, who owns the underlying consent record?
  4. Week 4: segment-driven journeys. Build a journey triggered by segment entry, using a segment from the Data side if your environment allows it. Pay attention to refresh timing — it is the mechanism behind most “my journey did not fire” support cases.
  5. Week 5: analytics and testing. Configure A/B testing, read the engagement and exit metrics, and practise interpreting a drop-off. Also work through troubleshooting: journey not firing, message not sent, message sent but not delivered, audience larger than expected.
  6. Week 6: practice assessment, then book. Sit the free practice assessment timed. Where you lose points, revise that skill area only. Book the exam at the end of the week, not the beginning — booking early creates a deadline you will study badly against.

If you want a longer runway, our Dynamics 365 Customer Insights guide covers the data side in the depth you will need to reason about segments.

War Story: The Certificate That Opened One Door and Closed Another

A marketing analyst in Pune took MB-260 after about six weeks of study — the plan above, followed reasonably well. She passed first time. Within three weeks she had an offer that surprised her: a marketing-operations role at a mid-sized retailer, at a better band than the agency job she had left.

What actually got her hired was not the badge. It was that, during the interview, she was asked why a campaign reached only 38% of her audience, and she explained it without hesitating — segment built from service consent, journeys enforcing marketing consent, so most of the audience was correctly suppressed. The interviewer had been burned by exactly this in a previous project and recognised someone who had been burned by it too.

There was a second effect, which is the part worth flagging. Having the certification made her apply to roles she would previously have dismissed as not quite matching her profile — she started getting shortlisted for functional-consultant and solution-consultant JDs, because the badge matched a keyword filter those recruiters used. One of those interviews was with a consulting firm where she was the only candidate who had actually configured a journey. That is where the badge genuinely did the work: not proving competence, but getting past a filter that would otherwise have ended the process.

What the certificate did not do was make her a marketing-ops manager, which was the role she wanted. That took three years of owning the calendar and the budget. The exam got her interviews; the job came from everything else.

Is MB-260 Worth It in India?

Honest answer: it depends entirely on where you are starting.

For someone moving from a marketing-operations or analytics job into a marketing-automation consulting role, it is worth it. The market is small, recruiters screen hard, and this is one of the few Microsoft credentials that maps onto an actual job title people hire for. Expect a modest pay effect — mostly at entry and mid level, where it changes whether you get an interview at all.

For someone already established in marketing operations, the return is smaller. You are not switching employer type; you are adding a line to a CV that already wins on outcomes. Take it only if the study time is genuinely free or your employer will pay for it.

For someone who thinks the credential will carry them into a senior marketing-ops role, it will not. Senior marketing operations is judged on budget, channel mix, team and results — none of which MB-260 assesses. And if you are deciding between this and the Data exam, the Data side has a visibly bigger Indian market and better pay ceiling; our Dynamics 365 Customer Insights salary guide for 2026 shows the two bands side by side.

FAQ

What is the dynamics 365 customer insights journeys certification exam code?

MB-260 — Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Journeys) Functional Consultant Associate. Check the live code and title on the Microsoft exam page at booking, because Microsoft’s functional exams are being consolidated over time.

Is MB-260 harder than the Customer Insights Data exam?

Similar in difficulty. The Journeys exam leans on trigger, segment and consent behaviour; the Data exam leans on modelling and identity resolution. Neither requires code. The Journeys exam is more scenario-driven, so practice reading a scenario and identifying the first action is the highest-value preparation.

How much does MB-260 cost in India?

It is a paid proctored exam priced per country and set at the point of booking through Pearson VUE. Check the current price on the Microsoft exam page before budgeting, and set aside more for hands-on environment time than for the exam fee itself.

Does the Journeys certification increase salary in India?

Only modestly, and mainly as a screen-clearing filter at entry and mid level in a thin market. For an established marketing-operations professional it changes very little, because senior hiring is judged on campaign outcomes and budget ownership, not credentials.

Can I take MB-260 without a Dynamics background?

Yes, though you will need a tenant to configure real journeys — the exam assumes familiarity with segments, triggers and consent states. Coming from a marketing automation platform such as Marketo or Braze is a reasonable path in, as long as you spend real time configuring rather than reading.
