Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based endpoint management service in the Microsoft Intune Suite. It manages Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and Linux devices, enforcing compliance, deploying apps, and protecting corporate data.

MDM (Mobile Device Management) enrolls and controls the entire device — settings, apps, security. MAM (Mobile Application Management) controls only corporate apps and their data, leaving personal data and apps untouched. MAM is the right choice for BYOD.

Windows Autopilot is a zero-touch deployment service that pre-provisions new Windows devices. The OEM ships the device directly to the user; the user signs in, and Intune automatically joins the device to Azure AD, applies policies, and installs apps.

Configuration Manager (SCCM/MECM) is an on-premises solution for managing Windows servers and PCs. Intune is cloud-native and manages Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. Most enterprises are co-managing both, retiring SCCM gradually.

A configuration profile is a set of settings (Wi-Fi, VPN, security baselines, restrictions) that Intune pushes to enrolled devices. Profiles can target Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android.

A compliance policy defines the conditions a device must meet (OS version, encryption, password complexity, jailbreak status). Non-compliant devices are flagged, and Conditional Access can block them from corporate resources.

Conditional Access in Azure AD can require a device to be marked as compliant by Intune before granting access to Exchange, SharePoint, or other cloud apps. This ensures only managed, healthy devices reach corporate data.

An app protection policy is a set of MAM rules (PIN, encryption, copy/paste restrictions, save-as restrictions) applied to a managed app. It protects corporate data inside the app without managing the device itself.

Device-based licensing is assigned per device and is best for shared devices. User-based licensing is assigned per user and is best for BYOD and personal devices. Each user license covers up to 5 devices.

Use one of four methods: Azure AD joined during OOBE for company-owned devices, Autopilot for zero-touch, Group Policy auto-enrollment for existing AD-joined devices via co-management, or manual enrollment by the user from Settings > Accounts.

Co-management is a configuration where a Windows device is managed by both Configuration Manager (SCCM) and Intune. The admin can move specific workloads (compliance, device configuration, Windows Update, etc.) from SCCM to Intune gradually.

Package the .exe or .msi as a Win32 app using the Microsoft Win32 Content Prep Tool, upload the .intunewin file to Intune, define install/uninstall commands and detection rules, assign to a group, and monitor deployment status.

A security baseline is a pre-configured set of settings curated by Microsoft for a specific scenario (Windows 11, Edge, Microsoft 365 Apps). It represents Microsoft’s recommended security posture and can be customized per environment.

Intune can escrow BitLocker recovery keys to Azure AD automatically when a device is encrypted. Admins can view the keys in Intune > Devices > [Device] > Recovery keys. The keys are also retrievable via PowerShell and Microsoft Graph API.

A custom compliance script is a PowerShell script uploaded to Intune that runs on Windows devices to evaluate additional compliance criteria not covered by built-in settings (e.g. specific registry keys, file existence, services running).

A dynamic group is a group whose membership is computed by rules based on user or device attributes. For example, you can target all Windows 11 devices in the Chennai office with a rule. Dynamic groups are powerful for assignment at scale.

From Intune > Devices > [Device] > Retire, Wipe, or Delete. Retire removes corporate data while keeping the device. Wipe resets the device to factory defaults. Delete removes the device record from Intune. For a lost device, the best choice is Wipe.

The Intune Management Extension (IME) is a Windows service that runs on enrolled devices to execute Win32 apps, PowerShell scripts, and custom compliance rules. Without it, only built-in settings and Store apps can be deployed to Windows.

Use Intune > Reports and the Intune admin center dashboards. You can see per-app deployment status (success, in progress, failed, error), per-device compliance, and per-user assignment. Connect the data to Log Analytics for long-term reporting.

Endpoint Analytics is a Microsoft Intune Suite feature that uses proactive remediations, startup performance scores, and device health metrics to identify and fix endpoint issues at scale. It’s a powerful tool for improving the user experience.

A proactive remediation is a pair of detection and remediation PowerShell scripts. The detection runs on a schedule; if it returns non-zero, the remediation script runs automatically to fix the issue. Common uses: clearing temp files, restarting services, fixing registry keys.

Enroll macOS via Apple Business Manager (Automated Device Enrollment) for company-owned Macs, or via User Enrollment for BYOD. Push configuration profiles, deploy apps as .pkg or PKG wrapped in Intune, and use shell scripts for advanced management.

Supervised mode gives full management control over the device, including restrictions, app installation, and remote wipe. It is only available for company-owned iOS devices enrolled via Apple Business Manager. Unsupervised is the default for BYOD with limited restrictions.

Use the MDM Migration Analysis Tool (MMAT) in Intune to analyze existing GPOs and map them to Intune configuration profiles (CSPs). Pilot the new policies on a small set of devices, then expand in waves. Keep GPOs in place until you have a 90% success rate in Intune.

A kiosk (assigned access) profile locks a device to a single app or a small set of apps. Common in retail, hospitality, and frontline worker scenarios. Available for Windows (Shell Launcher, Assigned Access), iOS (Autonomous Single App Mode), and Android.
