What IAM actually is

Authentication answers “who are you?”. Authorization answers “what may you do?”. Governance answers “who approved this, and when does it expire?”. Production IAM work is directory design, SSO (SAML and OIDC), MFA, joiner-mover-leaver, access reviews and privileged access — tied to tools enterprises already bought.

If you cannot walk a joiner-mover-leaver on a whiteboard, you are not interview-ready. If you can only recite “what is SSO”, you will lose to someone who has federated one app and run one certification campaign.

TCS, Cognizant, Wipro, HCL and GCC identity teams on OMR hire for tickets: a broken SAML assertion, a recertification nobody completed, a contractor who still has VPN after exit, a PIM role that was standing instead of eligible.   2. SAML 2.0 and OIDC — you must draw the flow and name the assertions/tokens.
  3. SCIM provisioning and de-provisioning.
  4. Conditional Access + MFA, including phishing-resistant options.
  5. One IGA: SailPoint IdentityNow or IdentityIQ, or Okta Lifecycle.
  6. PIM / just-in-time elevation.
  7. Ticketing discipline (ServiceNow) and change control.

Common questions: RBAC vs ABAC, SAML vs OIDC, orphan accounts, SoD, pass-through auth vs password hash sync, service principal vs managed identity. Practise answers out loud.
