Quick Answer: The dynamics 365 customer insights certification is the MB-220 exam, Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Data) Functional Consultant Associate. It is a genuine functional credential that clears resume filters for customer-data and analytics roles, and it is worth taking if you are early in your career or moving from a CRM or BI background. It will not carry a career on its own, because it tests configuration concepts, not the identity-resolution and governance judgement that a production Customer Insights project actually demands.
This post covers only the Customer Insights (Data) exam. The full ladder across every Dynamics 365 functional certification, with which ones are worth taking together and which are being consolidated, is in our Dynamics 365 certifications roadmap for 2026.
The Exam at a Glance
| Item | Detail | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Exam code | MB-220 | Verify the current code and name at booking — Microsoft’s functional exams are being consolidated over time and codes do move |
| Official title | Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Data) Functional Consultant Associate | The word “Data” is what distinguishes it from the Journeys exam |
| Level | Associate | Functional, not developer. No code is written in the exam |
| Format | Proctored multiple-choice and scenario-based items, delivered through Pearson VUE | Scenario questions dominate. Expect “you have been asked to do X, what do you do first” phrasing |
| Pass mark | Published as a scaled score; treat 700 out of 1000 as the working target | The published passing score is not a percentage — do not plan your revision around 70% |
| Prerequisites | None formally required | Recommended preparation is the free Microsoft Learn path plus hands-on configuration |
| Cost | Paid exam, priced per country at booking | Check the live price on the Microsoft exam page before you budget — it changes |
| Validity | Renew annually to keep the badge active | Renewal is cheap and quick once you hold the credential |
Two things to verify yourself at booking, because they are the parts that move: the exam code and title, and the price for your country. Microsoft’s Dynamics functional exams have been through a consolidation pass, and older blog posts still quote codes and titles that have moved. Everything else in this post — the skills measured, the study order, the honest verdict — stays valid regardless of how the certification is labelled.
Which Skills the Exam Actually Measures
| Skill area | What you are expected to know | Share of the exam |
|---|---|---|
| Configure and manage the data model | Data map, entity map, relationships between business concepts, data model design decisions | Large |
| Manage data and identity | Sources, entity mapping, identity resolution concepts, data quality and matching rules | Large |
| Create segments, measures and KPIs | Building audiences, defining measures, aligning definitions across a business | Moderate |
| Analyse and act on customer data | Relationship graph, dashboards, sharing audiences, connecting the model to activation | Moderate |
| Manage environments and governance | Environment configuration, permissions, and how a data platform is governed in practice | Smaller |
Note what the split tells you. This is a configuration exam. You will not be asked to write SQL, tune a matching algorithm, or debug a scheduled refresh. The exam is asking whether you can design a data model, keep entities mapped correctly, define audiences reliably and connect the result to action. If your strength is hands-on analytics tooling, the exam is easier than you expect. If your strength is business-side data ownership and stakeholder management, the exam is a formalisation of what you already do.
What the Exam Does Not Test (and What That Costs You)
This is the section most certification guides leave out, so here it is plainly.
- Production identity resolution. The exam covers matching concepts. It does not ask you to explain why a fuzzy email rule merged a family, or how you quarantine and review unmatched records. That judgement is the job.
- Data volume behaviour. Refresh times, query performance, warehouse mode versus streaming mode, what happens when a source lands late or out of order — none of it is in scope.
- Governance in a live organisation. Who owns a segment definition, what happens when a business team changes one, how you prevent a KPI quietly drifting. Also not in scope.
- SQL, DAX and modelling craft. Assumed background, not tested. Which is why the certification can be passed by someone who has never built a production model, and why people who have built one sometimes find it thin.
Read that list as a study guide, not a complaint. If you can genuinely configure a model but cannot yet explain a bad merge, the exam will not catch the gap — so plan to catch it yourself.
An Honest Eight-Week Study Plan
- Week 1–2: the model, not the marketing. Work through the free Microsoft Learn path for Customer Insights (Data). While you do, build a real thing: a trial environment, one Dynamics source, one external source, an entity map, and one deliberate identity-resolution rule set with a deterministic key and one fuzzy rule. Write down what breaks.
- Week 3: identity and data quality. This is where marks are won and where real work happens. Practise rule ordering, normalisation, what you do with unmatched records, and how you handle a source with no stable key. Be able to explain your choices out loud — scenario questions reward reasoning, not vocabulary.
- Week 4: measures, KPIs and segments. Define measures for a real estate (lifetime spend, active-in-N-days, order frequency). Build three segments with an owner, a definition and a known-gaps note. Practise the naming and the refresh behaviour.
- Week 5: consumption and activation. Relationship graph, dashboards, and pushing an audience to a downstream campaign or journey. Also read the sharing and permission model — governance questions appear in every version of this exam.
- Week 6: official practice and study path. Sit the free practice assessment under timed conditions. Where you lose points, that is your revision map for week seven. Most candidates lose them on identity resolution and on scenario reasoning, not on platform trivia.
- Week 7: scenario drilling. Work through business scenarios end to end: “the marketing team wants a segment of lapsed high-value customers but compliance says consent expired last month” — what do you do first, and why that order? This is the exam’s actual shape.
- Week 8: book, sit, and then build. Book the exam, sit it, and immediately start a portfolio project that is bigger than the exam. The certificate opens the door; the project is what gets you the interview.
War Story: The Certificate That Did Not Survive Production
A colleague joined a Bengaluru retail client’s data team in early 2026 with MB-220 already earned. He had passed it with a couple of weeks of Learn-path reading, which is roughly the minimum honest prep. In his second month he was asked to extend identity resolution to a new web-store source, and he configured it the way the exam describes: normalised email match first, then fuzzy name and address matching.
The problem was not the rule choice. It was that nobody had asked what the web store’s email field actually contained. Roughly 14% of rows held a shared placeholder — “[email protected]” — because the guest checkout flow never captured an address. A normalised exact match on email therefore merged every guest checkout in the country into a single profile. That one profile then carried a lifetime spend in the tens of lakhs, which made it the highest-value customer in the dataset, which made it the top of every segment, which made it the target of a ₹8 lakh retention campaign in month three.
The campaign was cancelled 48 hours before send, which was lucky. The fix took three weeks: exclude placeholder values as a pre-matching filter, add a deterministic rule on the order-token for guest records, and quarantine guest activity into its own segment with its own measures so it stops contaminating lifetime value for real customers. None of that is in the exam. All of it is the job.
What he took from it, and what he now says in interviews, is a good framing for anyone with the certificate: the exam proves you can configure a platform correctly under ideal conditions. Production is mostly about the data being wrong in a way nobody documented. The certificate got him through the resume filter; the guest-checkout incident is what made him useful in the room.
Is the MB-220 Worth It in India?
At the start of your career, yes as a filter, no as a substitute for a portfolio. Indian employers do screen on it, and it is one of the few Microsoft credentials that maps cleanly onto a job title people are actively hiring for — customer data analyst, CRM analytics consultant, marketing insights consultant. The filtering effect is real at the fresher and 1–3 year level, where it is often the difference between a callback and silence.
At mid level, the effect fades fast. At senior level it is close to irrelevant, and claiming it as a headline achievement on a senior CV reads worse than leaving it out, because it invites the question of what you have actually built. Put it under a certifications section and let a production model lead the profile.
The competitive reality also matters. For pure reporting and dashboard work, the Customer Insights name competes with the entire BI market, which is much bigger and better paid at the top. If your goal is the analytics band, our Dynamics 365 Customer Insights salary guide for 2026 shows where the two overlap and where they diverge. Compare it against the wider ladder on our 2026 Dynamics 365 certifications roadmap before you spend the fee.

FAQ
What is the dynamics 365 customer insights certification exam code?
MB-220 — Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Data) Functional Consultant Associate. Confirm the code and title on the Microsoft exam page at booking, because Microsoft’s functional exams are being consolidated over time and codes do move.
Is MB-220 hard to pass?
For someone who has configured a real environment, no — the exam tests concepts you would use anyway. For someone who has only read documentation, it is much harder, because most marks come from scenario reasoning about mapping, matching and governance rather than recall.
How much does the MB-220 exam cost in India?
It is a paid proctored exam priced per country and set at the point of booking through Pearson VUE, so check the live price on the Microsoft exam page before budgeting. Budget separately for practice material and for the hands-on environment time, which costs more than the exam fee in most cases.
Does the Dynamics 365 Customer Insights certification increase salary?
Modestly, mostly at entry level where it clears an automated filter, typically 0–8%. From mid level onward it matters far less than owning a production data model with identity resolution you can explain, and almost nothing at senior level.
Should I take MB-220 or the Journeys certification first?
Take the Data exam first if your interest is modelling and analytics, which is the harder and better-paid skill set. Take the Journeys exam first if your background is marketing automation and you want the fastest route into a campaign-operations role. Most people end up with one, not both.
