About Course
About ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level Training (CTFL)
Test design as a craft: equivalence classes, boundaries, decision tables, and the 40-question paper that tests whether you can use them.
Testing is usually described as checking that the software works. The craft is the reverse: design a test that can fail, and show the case a defect would break. The habit this course trains is starting from the risk, choosing the technique that fits it, and knowing the boundary you are standing on when you write the case. Equivalence partitioning, boundary values, decision tables and state transitions are the tools; the reasoning behind picking one is the skill.
Course Overview
12-week ISTQB CTFL training: testing fundamentals, black-box and white-box techniques, test levels, test planning, monitoring, control and the 40-question exam.
Why Learn ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level Training (CTFL)
Indian IT services, product companies and contract testing teams name the ISTQB Foundation more often than any other testing qualification, because a recruiter can check it before a technical round. It proves technique as well as vocabulary: a candidate who can explain why a boundary case exists has a different floor from one who has only clicked through a build.
With the CTFL you stop being the person who executes whatever script arrives and become the person who designs the cases, which is what a test analyst and a quality engineer are paid for. It also opens the advanced ISTQB levels and changes the interview, from asking about tools to asking what you would decide not to test.
Who Should Join This Course
- Fresh graduates starting in QA — Learning the vocabulary and the technique behind the title
- Manual testers moving up — Turning ad hoc checking into designed test cases
- Developers who now test — Adding test design to the work they already do
- Support and operations staff — Writing the test cases that prove a fix works
- BPO and contract testing teams — Working to a published standard instead of ad hoc instruction
- QA leads moving into test management — Planning and controlling a test effort properly
Prerequisites
No testing background is assumed. You need basic familiarity with software being built and released, and enough curiosity about how defects are found and prevented. The CTFL syllabus, its terminology and its exam question style are taught from the first session.
Learning Objectives
- Design test cases with equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis
- Build decision tables and state transition models from a specification
- Choose the right test level and test type for a given risk
- Write a test plan with scope, objectives, resources and schedule
- Monitor and control a test effort using the metrics that matter
- Write a defect report that a developer can act on without a meeting
- Place tests at the right layer using the test pyramid
- Sit the 40-question CTFL exam in 60 minutes and pass at 26 of 40
Certification Objectives Covered
The syllabus follows the published ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level objectives: ISTQB CTFL, Test Design Techniques, Test Case Design, Equivalence Partitioning, Test Planning, Defect Reporting and the technique worksheets, the test plan template and the 40-question mock papers.
Career Opportunities After This Programme
- QA Analyst
- Test Engineer
- Test Analyst
- Manual Tester
- Software Development Engineer in Test
- Quality Engineer
Hands-on Practice and Capstone
Capstone: Take one real change and do the work properly: write a test plan with scope, risks and resources, design the cases with equivalence partitioning, boundary values, a decision table and a state transition model, then run the mock paper under exam timing. Submit the plan, the case set, a trace matrix and a test summary report showing coverage, defects raised and the two syllabus chapters you still need to revise.
Production scenario: A release is due in four days and the only manual tester has found a defect that blocks checkout. Decide which test levels you will run, what you will descope, and what you will tell the release manager in the summary report before anyone asks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ISTQB CTFL training at SkilBrill?
It is preparation for the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level exam, the entry credential in the ISTQB certification scheme. The course follows the published syllabus: testing fundamentals, testing across the life cycle, static testing, test analysis and design, managing the test activities and test tools. It runs over 12 weeks and 72 hours.
How is this different from the Selenium, Cypress and API testing courses on this site?
Those programmes teach you a tool: how to drive a browser, call an API or push load at a server. The CTFL teaches the method behind the tool: how to design test cases, which technique fits which risk, how to plan and control a test effort, and how to report a defect. Many people take the CTFL first and then a tool course, or the other way round.
What does the CTFL exam involve?
It is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, and you need 26 points to pass, which is 65% of the total. The questions come from the six chapters of the syllabus, with the largest share sitting in test analysis and design and in the management chapter. Candidates whose first language is not the exam language are given 15 extra minutes.
Is any testing experience needed before I start?
No prior certification is required, and there is no minimum experience to sit the exam. ISTQB suggests around six months of testing exposure, but the syllabus and the question style are taught from the first session, including the vocabulary the exam turns on. Many people join straight from a graduate programme or from a support role.
What does the CTFL syllabus cover?
Six syllabus chapters in eight modules: testing fundamentals and principles, testing across the life cycle with static testing, test analysis and design, the black-box, white-box and experience-based techniques with the collaboration-based approach, managing the test activities, and tools with the risks of automation. The capstone adds a test plan, a designed case set and a mock paper.
What is the duration and fee?
Twelve weeks, three sessions a week of two hours each, totalling 72 hours, with the mock paper scheduled inside the course. Fees run from Rs 35,000 depending on batch and mode, with classroom, live online and hybrid options and placement support through 200+ hiring partners.
What certificate do I receive?
A SkilBrill Course Completion Certificate for the full 72 hours of the programme. The CTFL credential is issued by ISTQB through an accredited exam provider after you pass the paper, and it is the foundation level that the advanced ISTQB certifications build on. SkilBrill prepares you for that exam; it does not issue it.
