Ask ten people which cloud certification to start with and you will get ten different answers, usually based on whichever one they happen to hold. Here is a more useful way to decide — based on what is actually hiring in Chennai right now, not which exam has the nicest badge.
## If you want the widest job pool: AWS
AWS still has the largest market share in India, and that shows up directly in job postings — service companies, product startups, and MNC captive centers in Chennai all run workloads on it. The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the right starting point for a fresher; it is broad rather than deep, and it proves you understand cloud concepts without requiring hands-on infrastructure experience you likely do not have yet. Follow it with the Solutions Architect Associate once you have built at least one deployed project — that combination is what actually gets noticed in a resume screen.
## If you are targeting Microsoft-stack companies: Azure
If the companies you are applying to already run on Microsoft tools — Dynamics, .NET, Office 365 integrations — Azure certification carries more direct weight than AWS would. Several Chennai-based service companies working with enterprise clients fall into exactly this category. The AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals) is the equivalent starting point to AWS Cloud Practitioner exam.
## If you are leaning toward data or machine learning: GCP
Google Cloud has a smaller footprint in traditional Chennai IT services, but it is genuinely strong in data engineering and ML tooling — BigQuery in particular shows up a lot in data analyst job descriptions. If your career direction is data over general software development, the Google Cloud Digital Leader certificate is a reasonable entry point, but do not pick GCP as a first cloud cert purely because you are interested in data — pair it with SQL and Python skills, because the certificate alone will not carry a fresher resume.
## What actually matters more than the badge
None of these certificates get you hired by themselves. What gets you past a technical interview is being able to explain, in your own words, why you chose a particular service — say, why an S3 bucket instead of an EC2 instance for static file storage — and having one project where you deployed something real, even something small. A certificate with zero hands-on project behind it reads, to an interviewer, exactly like what it is.
## Our recommendation for most freshers
Start with AWS Cloud Practitioner. It is the most widely recognized starting certificate among Chennai employers, the exam content overlaps heavily with general cloud literacy (so the knowledge transfers if you later add Azure or GCP), and the free-tier account is generous enough to build a real project without spending money. Once you have got that plus one deployed project, you are in a genuinely stronger position than most fresher applicants — most of whom have the certificate and nothing built on top of it.
